Finding Joy: Strategies for Women Small Business Owners

Hey there, friend (and amazing small business owner)! This month is all about you—the heart of your small business. And as anyone who owns and runs their own business knows, it’s incredibly rewarding. And challenging. And exhilarating. And goodness, sometimes so very overwhelming. But amidst all this, there's a silver lining – the pure joy of doing something we love and making it successful. So, how do we find and hold onto this joy? Here are some tried-and-true ways, just for you!

Embrace the Learning Curve

Every Mistake is a New Lesson

Remember learning to ride a bike? More importantly, remember falling off the bike? And the wise advice to immediately get back on the bike? That’s what I’m talking about! Falling is a part of the journey. Every challenge is an opportunity to learn, and each hurdle is packed with lessons. When things don’t go as planned, instead of freaking out or beating yourself up—embrace it and ask, “What can I learn from this?" That mindset turns obstacles into stepping stones, paving the way to success and joy.

Keep Growing and Evolving

The business world is ever-changing, and as women small business owners we should be too! Attend workshops, read books, join online courses. Keeping our skills sharp and staying updated not only helps our business but also keeps us mentally stimulated and happy. Ask questions, be curious, and never stop growing!

Celebrate Every Achievement, Big or Small

The Power of Positive Reinforcement

Did you just finish a complex project or secured a new client? Celebrate! Did you make it through a tough week or finally complete a (not-at-all) daunting task that you’ve avoided forever? Celebrate! In the life of women as small business owners, big wins are incredible, but the small wins keep us going. These little victories are like milestones on the road to success. They deserve a moment of acknowledgment and maybe even a little reward. (Did someone say Treat Yo Self?) Making celebration a habit keeps us motivated and infuses joy into our daily grind.

Share Your Successes

Don’t keep those wins to yourself, friend! Share them with your team, family, or business community of other women small business owners. Celebrating these moments creates a culture of positivity and encouragement within your business and can be incredibly motivating for everyone around you.

Build and Cherish Your Community

The Strength in Connections

I cannot overstate this—you are not alone in this journey. No one understands the highs and lows of business ownership quite like fellow entrepreneurs. Find opportunities to connect with other women small business owners. Join networks, attend meetups, or participate in online forums. Surround yourself with fellow women entrepreneurs who understand your struggles and triumphs. Share experiences, offer advice, and lift each other up. In this nurturing environment, you won’t just find colleagues, but friends who cheer for your success.

Mentorship and Support

Another way to build a supportive community is to consider finding or becoming a mentor. The guidance from someone who's been in your shoes can be invaluable, and being a mentor can be equally rewarding. A relationship like this fosters growth, confidence, and a sense of fulfillment -- especially important for women small business owners. Personally, I am a part of an incredible networking group called Collab Culture here in Phoenix, Arizona. If you’re in the area, come join us!

Prioritize Your Well-being

Work-Life Balance is Key

Okay, you knew this one was coming, right? I truly understand how easy it is to get caught up in the hustle and forget to take care of ourselves. But remember, our well-being directly impacts our business’s health. Make time for yourself – whether it's a daily walk, a hobby, or just quiet time. I prioritize moving my body each day because it brings me joy and helps me be a better wife, mom, friend—and boss. The takeaway? A happy, healthy you leads to a thriving business.

Delegate and Trust Your Team

You aren’t alone on this journey, and you don’t have to do everything alone on this journey. Delegate tasks to your team or outsource when needed. This doesn’t just ease your workload, but it empowers the people on your team, which is key in building a stronger, more efficient business.

Keep Innovating and Stay Passionate

Remember why you started your business. Hold onto that passion. Innovate, try new things, and keep the excitement alive. This passion is contagious and can be the biggest source of joy in your entrepreneurial journey.
