I loved job interviews, but hated pitching my business. Here’s why.

Can I tell you a weird secret?
I LOVE job interviews. I know it sounds crazy. Hear me out.

Shopping for the perfect outfit, envisioning myself as a big-time boss lady with a shiny new job, and talking about what I’m good at and what my strengths are…there’s something about it that feels exciting and energetic to me. If you haven’t already clicked out of this email because you think I’m a psychopath, maybe you feel the same way.

So if I love job interviews…why do I hate pitching my business?

On paper, they should be the same thing. You talk about yourself to a complete stranger, telling them all about how good you are at what you do, how much value you have to offer, and how good of a fit you would be.

Yet somehow, a pitch feels so much more sales-y than an interview. It feels like I’m begging them for their hard-earned dollars. And a little bit of imposter syndrome shows up too; I feel like I don’t have what it takes to ask them for their money, I’ll never measure up to the other business owners that they’re talking to, and my work will never measure up. Have you ever felt that way?

I’ve felt this way for a long time, spinning my wheels as I outwardly tried to sell my business while inwardly I was cringing. Then, I sat down and asked myself a ton of questions to help me find clarity in my brand and business — and everything changed.

I figured out who I was trying to serve, what style I was best at, and what niche I was trying to hit, and all of a sudden it all fell into place.

We are a boutique design studio crafting modern & upscale branding & websites for women-owned small businesses wanting to reach new heights. We are based in Peoria, Arizona, but serve businesses all over the nation. We know who we are, what we do, and who we serve.

Now when potential clients come to us but aren’t the right fit for us (or maybe we aren’t the right fit for them!), we can tell them that confidently. We don’t have to put on a sales pitch that feels inauthentic, and we can save room for clients who are a good fit.

Now, sales pitches feel less like selling snake oil and more like I’m helping clients find out if we can help them get where they need to go. In turn, clients feel more connected to me, they have realistic expectations of what we can deliver, and when we are done with their project, they bring us more happy clients.

And more happy clients, means that, fingers crossed, I won’t need to interview for a job anytime soon.
